![]() Temporary Address Changes are not, for the most part-although anecdotal evidence suggests some databases manage to vacuum that information.Īlso keep in mind that forwarding always takes much longer (by 1-2 weeks) to implement than USPS suggests, and periodicals are usually not forwarded for long, if at all. Permanent Address Changes are publicized to databases, data aggregators, mailers, magazine publishers, government entities, and who knows who else. ![]() You can do that for up to a year, which should be plenty of time to get the mailers you choose updated with your address. ![]() It's too late for this, but in the future I highly recommend only using the temporary forwarding. I figured this way, when I choose a new apartment, I don't have to worry about mail going to my old (current) address. I did the permanent move option the through USPS online system. Forwarding for so-called Standard Mail is limited, including catalogs, magazines, non-profit mail, etc.įor now, I started forwarding my mail to my parent's house (they live in town). Sometimes notification of the address change will go to sender. In some circumstances mail will be returned to sender. So placing a permanent change of address order does not mean that all your mail will simply be forwarded. Only first class, Priority and Express Mail will be forwarded, and only if mailer did not place a restriction on forwarding. Some mail is endorsed "Return Service Requested" with mail returned to sender, and some is endorsed "Change Service Requested" where mailer gets notice of new address but the piece is destroyed by PO.Īlso there are restrictions on forwarding some classes of mail. Some mail is endorsed "Do Not Forward" like your ballot, IRS refund check, credit cards, etc. There are other endorsements that determine if and how mail addressed to you will or won't get forwarded to you. Sounds like this is what happened with your credit union. Smart businesses use this when they need to keep track of where their customers are. "Address Service Requested" on the envelope means the piece will get forwarded to you per your instructions while the mailer gets a separate printed notification of your new address. They pay extra for these various optional added services. Mailers can place so-called ancillary endorsements on the process. I just got an email from one of my credit card companies (Gap Inc Visa Signature) that they "received an address change and updated my information." You submitted a permanent address change with the United States Postal Service (USPS). ![]() Does this seem strange to anyone else? Anyone else experience something like this? In fact, I always keep a list of companies I need to change my address with after a move to update my address, including credit cards. I have used this USPS service each time I have moved or wanted my mail forwarded, and not once has it ever triggered an automatic address change with a company. I'm annoyed that this happened automatically. I certainly don't want it to show on my credit reports that I moved to an address that I did not move to (since CC companies forward info to them). I just got an email from one of my credit card companies (Gap Inc Visa Signature) that they "received an address change and updated my information." I had to immediately call them and explain I'm not actually moving to that address and to change it back to what it was. Then, once I move, I would manually change my address with credit card companies etc. For now, I started forwarding my mail to my parent's house (they live in town). I plan on moving to another apartment sooner than later, but I don't know exactly where yet.
